Throughout the day, the solar panel at the top of the lantern absorbs energy from the sun's rays and stores this energy in a rechargeable AAA-battery. At night the lanterns light automatically and they also switch off when there is no more power in the battery.

The solar panel lantern will stay lit for the longest period of time during summer, when the sun is high in the sky. Then the lanterns will remain lit for seven to eight hours, if they hang in a sunny position during the day. Even on a cloudy day, it is possible - during summertime - for the solar panel to charge.But then the lanterns will not stay on for as long during winter when the sun is low in the sky the time that the solar lanterns will stay lit will of course be reduced to a minimum.

I wipe the panel with a hard wrung cloth, dipped in a mixture of washing up liquid and a little vinegar. The latter helps remove any traces of calcium deposits.
